Syklo’s biocomposite plant

We are building our own biocomposite line as part of the Hyvinkää circular economy hub. The plant produces the best biocomposite on the market in terms of technical properties, designed to meet the high demands of the plastics industry.

Set to begin operations in early 2026, the plant will initially produce 8,000 tonnes of biocomposite annually for use as reinforcement in plastics. Following this, the goal over the coming years is to triple production and expand to larger production units after that.

The globally patented technology enables the reinforcement of plastics using recycled fibre, such as that sourced from recycled cardboard.

PATENTED TECHNOLOGY FOR DEMANDING APPLICATIONS

The unique technology used at Syklo’s biocomposite plant is the result of extensive, long-term research and development efforts over several years.

The technology is built on Syklo’s patented wet-stripping and DEVO extrusion techniques. In the wet-stripping method, recycled fibres are combined with recycled plastic to form a biocomposite. The process also enables recycled fibre waste to be directly cleaned and used in the production process, for example.

Pellets produced from plastic recycling can be used as a raw material in Syklo’s biocomposite production.

BENEFITS OF BIOCOMPOSITE

1

Utilising raw materials accelerates product production and reduces energy consumption.

3

Reduces the carbon footprint of long-lasting plastic products, as bio-based materials bind carbon throughout the product life cycles.

2

Lower carbon footprint compared to other commonly used reinforcement materials.

4

Supports sustainable development and provides innovative solutions for a wide range of industrial applications.

THE PLANT ENABLES TAILOR-MADE SOLUTIONS

Syklo’s expert technical team supports its customers throughout the biocomposite life cycle—from initial product development to full-scale production.

Pulp-based biocomposite can be used as a reinforcement for plastic in applications that require enhanced tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact resistance.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF THE BIOCOMPOSITE PLANT

Syklo aims to create higher-value applications for various recycled and waste-based raw materials. Its ultimate mission is to build a more sustainable world where materials are recycled rather than incinerated or sent to landfill.

Syklocomp masterbatch biocomposite is a climate-responsible solution, offering a lower carbon footprint compared to traditional plastics and the materials used in their reinforcement. The water and wastewater created in the wet stripping process can be recovered for the plant’s closed-loop system.

In addition, as a bio-based product, Syklocomp sequesters carbon throughout the final product’s life cycle.
