Syklo’s New Fully Electric Crushing Line in Oulu Cuts Emissions and Multiplies Capacity

Circular economy company Syklo has commissioned a new fully electric wood crushing line at its Oulu waste sorting plant at the end of November. The €2 million euros investment reduces the carbon footprint of crushing and increases annual capacity to 20,000 tonnes.

Lower CO₂ emissions – higher waste crushing capacity

The fully electric, fixed crushing line replaces diesel-powered mobile crushers, reducing the climate impact of crushing operations.

“By electrifying the process, we can handle larger material flows more efficiently and in a more environmentally friendly way. Moving to a modern crushing line is a concrete step towards a circular economy that respects the environment,” says Antti Mattila, Project Manager at Syklo’s Oulu sorting plant.

Initially, the crusher’s main product will be recycled wood chips delivered to Oulun Energia’s bio power plant, providing added security for district heating production.

More versatile waste processing options

The advanced crushing process includes pre-crushing, metal removal and fine crushing, after which the material is ready for reuse as a new raw material.

Supplied by German HAAS Recycling-Systems, the line enables more diverse material streams, such as all wood materials from demolition timber to rough boards, as well as challenging fractions like furniture, mattresses and various plastics. This adds flexibility to Syklo’s operations and supports pre-treatment of plastic raw materials for the plastic recycling plant soon to open at the Hyvinkää circular economy hub.

“We can now crush waste fractions requested by our customers into smaller particle sizes more flexibly. Our annual crushing capacity will rise to 20,000 tonnes,” says Laura Kemppainen, Customer Manager at Syklo.

The investment supports the target of increasing the recycling rate

Syklo’s Oulu waste sorting plant is one of Finland’s most advanced circular economy plants. The plant receives 75,000 tonnes of construction and demolition waste as well as commercial and industrial waste annually.

The new crushing line strengthens Syklo’s role as a pioneer in the circular economy and supports the company’s strategic goal of reducing the climate impact of recycling processes.
